Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

The holiday season often evokes a spirit of togetherness and a desire to connect with others. With that idea in mind, we will focus on Fellowship, one of my 7 Fs: Faith, Family, Friends, Fellowship, Fun, Fitness, and Finance. The 7 Fs are guiding principles which, I believe, are essential to living a life balanced in mind, body, and soul.

As we reflect on the quality time spent with our family and friends celebrating the joys of the season and set out to make our mark in the New Year, let us make a conscious effort to step outside of ourselves and encourage one another along the way. While often thought of in a spiritual context, fellowship extends to our daily interactions with anyone.  People who come together to pursue a shared interest or aim are in fellowship with each other; it is a relationship, not an activity. A classic example of personal and professional fellowship is the relationship that my business partners at BCT Partners, Lawrence Hibbert, Dallas Grundy, Jeffrey Robinson and I have cultivated over a span of decades. In fact, 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of our business relationship, a milestone that we will celebrate and commemorate later this year!  Fellowship is the catalyst for collaboration and communication and a key ingredient to the kind of success that stands the test of time.

So, I encourage you to actively seek fellowship opportunities to serve others and surround yourself with people who share your perspective, affirm your values, and support your goals. You will ultimately achieve more than you ever could alone.

Peace and blessings,

The Power of Strength in Numbers

Dr. Jeffrey Robinson and I sat down with Earl Christian III of The Urban Wall Street Project during a stop on the Redefine the Game National Town Hall Tour for our latest book Black Faces in White Places. During the interview, we referenced a key game-changing strategy in the book we call Strategy 6: Find Strength in Numbers. One of the best decisions I have ever made was to not go into business alone but to find strength in numbers with three classmates of mine at Rutgers University. I can say, unequivocally, that were it not for that friendship, fellowship, and brotherhood, we would not be where we are today. Harnessing the power of individuals that have shared issues, interests or causes sets the stage for achieving greatness. As the African proverb says, “When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.”
