Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

This month, we continue our series on my 7 Fs: Faith, Family, Friends, Fellowship, Fun, Fitness, and Finance. The 7 Fs are guiding principles which, I believe, are essential to living a life balanced in mind, body, and soul. This month, we focus on Fun!

Most people have heard about their Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Quotient (EQ), but what about your Fun Quotient (FQ)? What is an FQ, you ask? Simply put, it is the amount of time you spend doing things that are light-hearted and fun like playing sports, dancing, traveling or going to the movies. With the increasing demands placed on us at work and in our personal lives, I'm sure most of us could use a little help in the fun department. Not to get too scientific, but when you calculate the number of hours you spend per week doing things that are fun and then applying that number to the FQ equation (X÷168 hours per week = X Fun Quotient), you will quickly see what percentage of your hours each week are related to fun activities. My guess is that, for most people, this percentage is fairly low. Between sleeping, working, commuting to work, parenting and maintaining a household, there's little time left for fun. Laughter and light-hearted experiences have been shown to have a healing effect on the mind, body and soul, and they appear to bring about changes in the brain chemicals that alter mood and immune functions. Need I say more?

So, as you make your plans for the week, include at least one fun activity for every day, and then, like Nike says, "Just do it!" The challenge to boost your FQ is yours to claim!

Peace and blessings,

In 2011, I had the distinct pleasure of serving as keynote speaker at SuccessNet, a networking event hosted by George C. Fraser, Founder and CEO, FraserNet, Inc. and WBLS radio personality Liz Black. In one of the lighter moments, I was interviewed by actor and TV personality Steven Strickland. We talk about everything from The Apprentice to my firm, BCT Partners, to my latest book, Black Faces in White Places. Check out this "fun" video right here!
