Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

We continue our focus on “awareness months,” or months during which causes are championed and events celebrated. April promotes the awareness of a number of causes, including Autism Awareness, Child Abuse Prevention and Volunteer Month. In this issue, we highlight all three under the overarching theme of volunteerism as a way of “giving back” to worthy causes.

Jane Deeter Rippin and Marian Wright Edelman once said that “Service to others is the rent we pay for the space we occupy on earth.” There are countless ways we can all “give back” or “pay it forward” in our daily lives. It can be through our personal interactions with family, friends, and those less fortunate than us – the comfort, the care, and the concern that we show toward others. We can give back through the clubs, the causes, and the charities we support and by our efforts in community service: giving generously of our time (i.e. volunteering to help those in need), our talent (i.e. using our skills to help the charities and organizations we support), our treasure (i.e. giving money or donating goods), and our touch (i.e. our kind words and random acts of kindness to encourage others). As someone who humbly endeavors to make a difference in the lives of others, I am often reminded of this quote:

Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. – Unknown

So, I challenge you to make a difference in the lives of others by volunteering in your community and reflecting on how you can create opportunity for others.

Peace and blessings,

Randal Keynotes The Urban League of the Upstate Dinner

I was honored to serve as keynote speaker for The Urban League of the Upstate’s 42nd Annual Equal Opportunity Day (EOD) Dinner in Greenville, SC, last month. The Urban League of the Upstate is a non-profit organization committed to the principle of equal opportunity for all citizens in housing, education, employment, and economic development, without regard to race or socioeconomic status. The League advocates on a broad range of issues to improve the quality of life for minorities, disadvantaged people and others that have experienced discrimination. It was truly a privilege to have been a part of such an important event.  At the EOD dinner, the Urban League of the Upstate recognized individuals and corporations that have been instrumental to accomplishing their mission including several volunteers. Coincidentally, as we celebrate “Volunteer Month,” my core message that evening was focused on the value and the importance of volunteers. Here are just a few of the evening’s highlights:

Autism Speaks®: It’s Time to Listen

As a national spokesperson for Autism Speaks, an international organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for autism research, I am honored to be a partner in the fight against a disorder that affects an estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls in the U.S. Founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism, Autism Speaks has grown into the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey: Protecting New Jersey’s Children

Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey (PAC-NJ) holds a special place in my heart for their work as a recognized leader for prevention work in the state. For more than 30 years, the organization has implemented a broad range of prevention services that now operates in all 21 counties of the state. I was honored two years ago with their "Exemplary Service Award” and have served as emcee for several of their annual charity galas. On May 8 2014, PAC-NJ will host its 35th Anniversary Gala at the Maritime Parc in Jersey City, NJ. The event will include a silent auction, dinner and entertainment.
