Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

As we enter the summer season, we continue our focus on "awareness months," or months during which causes are championed and events celebrated. June promotes the awareness of a number of causes, Children’s Awareness, Vision Research and ALS Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This month, we celebrate Father’s Day or what I call “Dad’s Day.”  Why?  To be a father, you only have to make a baby.  Being a loving and responsible parent to a child makes you a dad.  We have plenty of fathers in this world. We need more dads.

In his recent Father’s Day weekend radio address, President Barack Obama spoke on the crucial role of dads and the important role they play in children’s lives, noting that “real courage comes from not just having children, but raising them.” While this special day is marked by greeting cards, breakfast in bed and golf outings, "Dad's Day" represents so much more than that. This special day says to dads, whether biological or not, that we appreciate you. We appreciate you as mentor, sounding board and role model even when your efforts go unnoticed. We appreciate the positive examples of manhood you display to children who would otherwise not have them. In a poignant Father’s Day speech at the Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s South Side in 2008, President Obama said it best: “Of all the rocks upon which we build our lives, we are reminded today that family is the most important. And we are called to recognize and honor how critical every father is to that foundation. They are teachers and coaches. They are mentors and role models. They are examples of success and the men who constantly push us toward it.”

So, as we celebrate the dads in our lives this month and throughout the year, let us reflect on how we, as men, can set examples of excellence for our children and affirm the values our dads instilled in us.

Peace and blessings,

Randal

Randal Talks About “The State of Black Men” for the National Urban League's "State of Black America"

Policy makers and business leaders came together to discuss solutions and best practices for overcoming the challenges facing men and boys of color. I had the distinct privilege of contributing to this important conversation for the National Urban League’s 2014 “State of Black America: The State of Black Men.” Moderated by renowned journalist Jeff Johnson, I was joined by Spencer Overton, Interim President of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

BREAKTHROUGH

Randal Honored at Harvest of Hope’s 4th Annual Father’s Day Brunch

I was excited and humbled to have been honored by Harvest of Hope at its 4th Annual Father’s Day Brunch earlier this month, a celebration of men who have championed the cause for children. I shared this amazing honor with the esteemed Pastor Rob Cruver, Zarephath Christian Church; Peter Starnanidis, Venus Jewelers; and Charles Corpening, Trustee, First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens.

Harvest of Hope Family Services Network, Inc., is a faith-based foster care and adoption agency that was founded by Rev. Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr. in 1997.  The agency has recruited and trained over 448 families to become licensed foster families. Amongst the core value of Harvest of Hope is “the need to be accountable to those who count on us and a sense of urgency and compassion to provide loving and caring homes for children”.  Harvest of Hope holds true to its mission to create solutions for children in need of out-of-home placements throughout the state of New Jersey.
