Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

The summer season is marked with reunions, vacations and a host of other opportunities to spend quality time with family. As we continue our focus on “awareness months," or months during which causes are championed and events celebrated, it is quite fitting that we highlight Purposeful Parenting Month for the month of July.

You might be asking yourself, “What is Purposeful Parenting?”  Simply put, it is making an effort to engage with your child every day. It is about parenting for the purpose of ensuring that children are reared in a secure and supportive environment – one that cultivates their ability to reach their God-given potential, whatever that may be. For example, when you intentionally make time in your schedule to play with your children, you are being a purposeful parent. When you help them with homework, eat dinner around the kitchen table together and make it a point each day to find at least one thing your child has done right and praise her/him for it, you are engaging in purposeful parenting. Last month, I was honored at the Harvest of Hope Family Services 4th Annual Father’s Day Brunch at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, an event that honored child advocates. From my perspective, being a foster parent embodies the essence of purposeful parenting. While I was the official recipient of the "Men Who Have Championed the Cause for Children" award, I could have not achieved such an honor without the constant support of my incredible and dedicated wife, Zahara Wadud-Pinkett.  In that spirit, I re-presented the award to her publicly in recognition of all she does for our children and foster children in New Jersey. Zahara is a genuine advocate for youth and is the only mother I know to receive an award on Father's Day!

So, as we celebrate Purposeful Parenting Month, I challenge you to find new ways to act on purpose as you strive to build meaningful relationships with your children and our all of our youth.

Peace and blessings,

Harvest of Hope Family Services Network, Inc. Featured on Spotlight NJ

Rev. DeForest Soaries, Jr., Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens and Founder and CEO, Harvest of Hope Family Services Network, Inc., and Maureen Archibald, Executive Director, Harvest of Hope, sat down with Della Crews on Spotlight NJ to talk about the important work of Harvest of Hope in making a difference in the lives of children. With a mission of advocating for policies that address the immediate and long-term needs of foster children, the organization seeks to develop permanent solutions for foster children and parents. Foster care needs continue to be overwhelming, and Harvest of Hope is uniquely positioned to expand its support to our most vulnerable population, children whose parents or biological family members cannot or will not provide caring and safe homes for them.

Randal Honored at Harvest of Hope’s 4th Annual Father’s Day Brunch

I was excited and humbled to have been honored by Harvest of Hope at its 4th Annual Father’s Day Brunch last month, a celebration of men who have championed the cause for children. I shared this amazing honor with the esteemed Pastor Rob Cruver, Zarephath Christian Church; Peter Starnanidis, Venus Jewelers; and Charles Corpening, Trustee, First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens.

Harvest of Hope Family Services Network, Inc., is a faith-based foster care and adoption agency that was founded by Rev. Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr. in 1997.  The agency has recruited and trained over 448 families to become licensed foster families. Amongst the core value of Harvest of Hope is “the need to be accountable to those who count on us and a sense of urgency and compassion to provide loving and caring homes for children”.  Harvest of Hope holds true to its mission to create solutions for children in need of out-of-home placements throughout the state of New Jersey.
