Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

Last month, I began a new series on my 7 Fs: Faith, Family, Friends, Fellowship, Fun, Fitness, and Finance. The 7 Fs are guiding principles which, I believe, are essential to living a life balanced in mind, body, and soul. This month, we focus on Finance.

September can be thought of as a transitional month. The relaxed attitude of summer is replaced by a back-to-reality mindset as we wind down our summer vacations and prepare for a more scheduled pace of life. This is the time of year where retailers start gearing up to drive more consumers into their stores for "Back to School" sales and getting consumers into the habit of spending months before the start of the official holiday season. As a result, we are tempted to buy things we don't need with money we don't have. In a 2011 news article, Bloomberg.com reported that consumer spending in the U.S. accelerated last September despite tough economic conditions. While this is good news for retailers, it may not be for consumers if it means accumulating more debt in the process.

According to a recent survey by Careerbuilder.com, more than three-quarters of respondents were living paycheck-to-paycheck, highlighting the need to live within one's means while reducing and eliminating debt. Avoid falling into the trap of "keeping up with the Joneses" – purchasing a car you can't afford just because you want to look "cool" driving it; buying the latest gadgets because "everyone else" has them; or opening up new lines of credit just because the offers are waiting in your mailbox. Recognize these are traps that serve only to keep you in debt! Media images of wealth are enticing – big houses, fast cars, and expensive clothes – who wouldn't want that? But, buying into the belief that material things make you happy may only lead to a legacy of debt.

In response to the growing need for Americans to practice better financial management, my pastor, Dr. DeForest B. Soaries, Jr., Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, New Jersey, launched "The Billion Dollar Challenge", a debt reduction initiative that challenges us to take control of our finances by creating debt reduction goals, forming online support groups, and most importantly, paying off debt. As a proud spokesperson for the Challenge, I invite you to create an account online, set your debt pay-down goals, and track your progress by visiting the website. You can also form a group of friends, family, or co-workers to work together. There are no fees or costs at all!

The rewards of freeing oneself from debt are priceless – greater peace of mind and sense of security, reduced stress, improved credit worthiness, and additional income for savings and investments, to name a few. So, as you wind down your summer and enter a new season, I challenge you to commit yourself to taking (and maintaining) control of your finances. You will find that it is well worth the effort.

Peace and blessings,

Randal
