Elevate your game

Dear Friends:

This month, we continue our series on my 7 Fs: Faith, Family, Friends, Fellowship, Fun, Fitness, and Finance. The 7 Fs are guiding principles which, I believe, are essential to living a life balanced in mind, body, and soul. This month, we focus on Fitness.

For as long as I can remember, I have strived to live life to the fullest, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a big part of achieving that goal. From my perspective, maintaining good health and fitness gives you the ability to live an active lifestyle, or at least live it effectively. As a former athlete, I learned early on the importance of taking care of yourself. It’s no secret that my schedule is extraordinarily busy, and I don’t think I could maintain that kind of schedule without maintaining good health and good fitness. When we think of fitness, we often think of images displayed on the cover of Men’s Health or Shape magazines. I would argue that, in order to achieve long-term success in elevating your fitness game, it’s important to pursue fitness goals consistent with your personal wants and needs, not someone else’s. The mind is a powerful thing, so mastering your thoughts is vital to living a healthy lifestyle. Negative self-talk can sabotage your efforts before you even begin. Not only is it counterproductive, but bad thoughts actually create neural connections in the brain that perpetuate an unhealthy state, making it harder to lose weight. Imagine that! So, don't stress if you haven’t worked out in a while, ate something you know you shouldn’t have or have relegated fitness to something to be enjoyed by everyone else. And, most importantly, don’t compare yourself to someone else; there’s only one you, so appreciate your unique assets and abilities. Your thoughts control your actions, so make sure they’re positive ones!

The rewards of a living a healthy lifestyle cannot be underestimated. So, as we say goodbye to summer and enter the cooler months of fall, I challenge you to commit yourself to elevating your fitness game and to becoming the best you you can be! You will find that it is well worth the effort.

Peace and blessings,
