Elevate your game

Dear Friends,

HBCUs. Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Perhaps you attended one. Perhaps you sent your children in hopes of expanding their understanding of their history, roots, capabilities and talents amid others who understand the unique experiences of African Americans. Or perhaps you were one of the few non-Blacks who attended and gained a new perspective. And finally, perhaps you’ve heard the acronym, HBCU, thrown around and never quite caught the distinction or the meaning...until today.

As part of the United Negro College Fund’s HBCU Empower Me Tour with Randal Pinkett and Friends, I have the esteemed honor of meeting with students from all across the country who are pursuing higher education and graduating with high honors and the highest aspirations.

The HBCU Empower Me Tour is an exciting ½-day event filled with workshops, presentations and panel discussions on health and wellness, entrepreneurship, professional development, financial literacy, environment and philanthropy for college students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). At each stop on the tour, I moderate Q&A panels with celebrity guests such as Ledisi, Sheryl Underwood, Warren Ballentine, Tatayana Ali, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Dee Marshall. The event also includes entertainment, listening parties, book signings, giveaways and much more.

Education is a passport to opportunity. It is important to understand the importance of a college education and how to leverage it not only for self-improvement, but also to build stronger communities. An education is one of the most powerful investments we can make. Organizations like the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation and FedEx, sponsors of the tour, are demonstrating their commitment to investing in education. I’m proud to partner with them and the UNCF to increase awareness of key global issues and inspiring young minds. The tour is free and open to the public so please visit the HBCU Empower Me Tour website to see if we are coming to an HBCU campus near you.

Peace and blessings,

Operation HBCU Rescue

If a mind is a terrible thing to waste, then so is a chance to save our schools. Regardless of what schools you did or did not attend, it’s hard to deny the dire need for continuing to support these historically black institutions. Many question if they will eventually become extinct, especially in light of today’s difficult economic times. Essence.com investigates whether or not it is the end of an era for these historically black colleges and universities.
